End of the road for Barons, Rangers at Kiwanis midget tournament
Barons run at the Kiwanis International Midget Tournament in Gatineau came to an ignominious end on Saturday at the hands of the host Outaouais Intrepide. The Braons took to the ice less than 24 hours after beating the Rouyn-Noranda Citadelle with a depleted roster in the quarterfinals. Despite calling up two affiliate payers, Cumberland was still overmatched in the semi-finals by an Outaouais team that can throw four solid lines at their opponents. The Barons lack of energy was evident by the number of mental mistakes made by the team's defensive corps and the lack of a sustained back check on the part of the forwards. The combined result was a ton of penalties and very little in the way of offense. The only positive that came out of the game was the play of goaltender Max Lortie who was selected as the Barons' most valuable player despite allowing seven goals, and the team's penalty killers who kept the Intrepide's power play unit off the board during eight power pay opportunities including a lengthy two man advantage in the first period.
